I don't want to do a whole recap of today's game, because for the most part, the backups and more so minor league guys played.
There was no Morneau, no Gomez and even the regulars like Cuddyer and Mauer didn't seem to play all that much. I did want to write about something, and that is Kevin Slowey.
Looking at Slowey's stats from today's game, you may not think he pitched all that well. But the truth is, he could have allowed no runs if not for a few different things. Here are some notes on Slowey:
** Slowey's final line was 5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 SO.
** Slowey was sharp through 3.2 innings. In fact, he retired the first eleven hitters in order and was pitching a perfect game to this point. Jason Bay, on a defensive swing, singled through the middle with two outs in the fourth. Then, there was a hard-hit liner to Craig Monroe. The inning should have probably been over, but Monroe seemed to take a step in first and the ball went over his head. The inning went from zero runs to three after that.
** In the next inning, Luis Rivas lead off the inning with a bloop double. Actually the ball dropped in the middle of Harris, Monroe and right next to Punto. It wasn't an easy play, but Punto should have caught the ball. Rivas scored later in the inning.
** For the most part, Slowey hit his spots and did a nice job. He pitched very well except for the four runs, and as you just read, those could have been avoided.
Tomorrow will be a huge day for Scott Baker and the Twins. If all goes well, Baker should be on schedule to pitch in the fifth game of the season against the Royals. If it doesn't go well, the rotation could be shaky early on.
