Congrats Harris, Twins Cut Seven E-mail

The Twins made seven roster moves today to trim down the roster. Four players were optioned to AAA Rochester, and they include right-handed pitchers Julio DePaula and Bobby Korecky and infielders Alexi Casilla and Matt Macri.

Mariano Gomez and infielders Chris Basak and Howie Clark were all assigned to Minor League Camp.

I can only say that I’m surprised to see two of these players cut -- Alexi Casilla and Julio DePaula.

Matt Macri hasn’t played bad, but with so many infielders vying for spots, it was likely that he was going to start the season at AAA. As for Korecky, he was bound to be cut eventually with so many other guys ahead of him in the bullpen race.

I was surprised that the Twins cut DePaula so early. He had pitched pretty well, and I thought he had a decent chance to be that twelfth man out of the ‘pen. The cut that surprised me the most however was that of Alexi Casilla. Casilla had played very well and shown off his speed. He was supposedly in the race for the second base job, and now that he is gone, it looks like Brendan Harris will be the starting second basemen on March 31 barring injury.

With the seven cuts, the Twins now have 42 players remaining in camp.

Casilla

This is the cut that really surprised me especially with Watkins still in camp and Matt Tolbert (I really like him, but him over Casilla?). I think Keisler should have been optioned before DePaula...

Harris has 2B now, Everett has SS, Lamb has 3B, Morneau has 1B. Interesting article here on the Twins Fan Forum about Harris' D at 2B:

you know, people keep talking about Harris lack of defense, but his fielding %, at second base, was better than Casilla was AND his zone rating was better....his fielding % at second base was ALSO better than Punto's was last year, though Punto had a better zone rating. Harris can play defense...at 2B...he's just not a shorstop which is where he had to play a lot last year...I'm hoping with him at his normal position, he hits even better than last year...that'd be a treat...
Thoughts on Cuts

The more I think about it, the Casilla cut isn't all that surprising to me. He made some bonehead plays on defense, and I think they want him to clean that up first.

The Twins have said that they are impressed with Tolbert. The Pioneer Press said that he'll likely start at AAA, but should be in MN at some point. I'd like to take him north over Punto.

The only thing that makes me mad is seeing some of these guys that have nearly no chance to make the team stick around (Watkins, Keisler, etc.)
Looks like..

Casilla may have been cut because the Twins want to move him back to shortstop where he isn't as sloppy.
