He's Kidding, Right? E-mail

As Klew1987 pointed out in the forum, manager Ron Gardenhire has come out and said the thing most fans don’t want to hear:

“We’re kind of trying to go with Hernandez, but we’ll see how everything goes. He should be the guy. I was kind of leaning that way, but wait and see what happens as we go along here.”

I, like a lot of other fans, like the signing of Hernandez. It adds some depth in the rotation, and gives guys like Humber, Blackburn and Mulvey more time to work on things in the minors. But making Hernandez the Opening Day starter in a mistake.

Scott Baker deserves the spot, and taking that away from him is ridiculous. Being a veteran shouldn’t automatically make you the team’s Opening Day guy, and that role should go to your ace.

What do you think? Discuss it here or in the thread linked to above.

What do teams traditionally do for openning day? Ace or Vet?
Hmm

Its hard for me to say. The more I think about it, the Twins always went with Radke over Santana. I can't remember if they changed that his last year.

I think it just really makes me mad because I'm sick of them always going with the vets for everything over young guys.

Being the veteran player does not save you from being sent back to AAA if you don't perform. I think you should have to earn your place and I agree hands down that Baker deserves the start. Gonna start with the vets at every position? Oh wait - we don't have vets at all positions.. hee hee. smilies/wink.gif

When I saw the article about this on the Twins website, I laughed. I couldn't believe that Gardy is seriously considering having Livan starting on Opening Day and being the number one starter. I hoping Baker and then Liriano later in the year as the number one starter.

I think it's dumb to nominate an Opening Day starter based on his "expereince" What differenec does it make? You nominate a starter based on his work not what he did five years ago.
I agree...

..with you guys on this.

I can see, if Hernandez pitches lights out, how he can get the start. But that isn't the case and Baker should get the start.

Liriano I can see not getting it based just off his injury (please be on the Opening Day roster smilies/grin.gif )
