Joe Mauer hadn’t hit a homerun in the first two months of the season, bur four days into the third month of the season, Mauer now has two.
On Monday, Mauer hit a big homerun to tie the game in the seventh inning. It was his first of the season, and somewhat odd coming off left-handed pitcher Andy Pettitte.
Again on Wednesday night, Mauer launched an inside pitch into the upper-deck in right field to give the Twins a two-run advantage over the Orioles. Yet again, his second homerun of the season was off a left-handed pitcher.
The Orioles had brought in lefty Jamie Walker with two outs to attempt to retire the left-handed hitting Mauer. But Mauer received another inside pitch and drove it.
Both of his homeruns have come off lefties and both have been inside pitches. No matter how they’ve come, Mauer is finally living up to his nickname in the month of June.
Bonser Impressive
Boof Bonser has been summoned to the bullpen, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still help the team.
Glen Perkins had his first poor outing of the season lasting just four innings. But Bonser was there in the long relief to hold the game close.
Bonser lasted two and two-thirds innings and struck out four hitters while allowing just one hit and one walk. Bonser looked outstanding in his first appearance out of the ‘pen and finally picked up a victory.
Did that happen?
There were some impressive plays in the team’s thirty-first win of the season including some spectacular defensive plays and a Mauer homerun. However, there was nothing more impressive than the two-run sacrifice fly off the bat of Mauer.
With runners at second and third, Mauer lifted a deep fly to left centerfield. It was easy for Cuddyer to score from third, but when centerfielder Adam Jones slipped, Gomez went from second to home on the fly-out. The fall did cost a second, but anybody else, without Go-Go’s speed, still wouldn’t have scored.
