In a recent blog posting, Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune mentioned that after talking with people in the organization, he has gotten the feeling that the team will recall lefty Francisco Liriano sometime very soon and summon either he, Nick Blackburn or Glen Perkins to the bullpen.
Is this the right move though?
Sure, brining Liriano to the majors is the right move, but are those the three candidates that should be up for removable from the rotation?
First off, Liriano shouldn’t be an option for the bullpen. He’d definitely help the team there, but with his dominance at triple-A, Liriano should be in the rotation.
He however isn’t the one I have a problem with. In fact, it’s both Nick Blackburn and Glen Perkins. Perkins should not even be considered, he has been one of the team’s best pitchers in the past month. As for Blackburn, his one bad start in New York shouldn’t be enough to warrant the move.
It’d be a much better option to trade veteran Livan Hernandez and let the entire young rotation work their way to the postseason. Hernandez has been great at home this season, but on the road has been absolutely disastrous. If a team is willing to give up some sort of prospect, the Twins should consider it.
Finally, while this move is pretty much one-hundred percent unlikely, what about having Liriano and Hernandez switch off for the spot in the rotation? Livan starts at home and Liriano on the road. It isn’t going to happen, but it sure would be interesting.
Nonetheless, whether the Twins make a move at the deadline or not, they have a lot of work to do in order to clean up the roster. Guys like Bonser, Everett (who the team must make a decision about on Monday) and Monroe must be dealt with.
