Casey Blake In Minnesota? E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory

It’s far from an imminent move for the Twins, but anything within a week of the trade deadline qualifies as news. The Dallas Morning News did a trade story on their area team, the Texas Rangers, and mentioned a few teams that are reportedly interested in the Cleveland Indians’ multiple position player, Casey Blake.

"The Rays have reportedly joined the Twins, Dodgers and Mets as clubs interested in acquiring Cleveland's Casey Blake. Like the Mets, the Rays envision Blake in the outfield and if he were to end up with either of those clubs, it can only help drive the Hank Blalock market."

Like I said, this is far from imminent. We don’t really know how interested the Twins are, what they’d be willing to offer, and how interested the Indians are in moving him. Plus, trading within a division is always tougher than making a move with another team.

No matter what the case, the move would be intriguing. For the Twins, Blake would be a third basemen. He’d also be the ideal fit for a team looking to add a hitter to add some pop against left-handed pitching.

Overall this season, Blake is hitting .287 with 11 homeruns and 58 RBI’s. Against lefties, Blake has a solid .313 batting average.

The Twins will arrive in Cleveland for a three game series starting tomorrow. Maybe some talks could heat up with just a week before the deadline.

I'd be surprised if the Indians want to move Casey Blake, but if the Twins can get their hands on him, give it a shot. This isn't to say Brian Buscher isn't capable of keeping his job at third base, but worst case scenario is that he's one of the first off the bench. The Twins brought in Mike Lamb, but he hasn't solved the third base dilemma with his low production (despite the 3 for 4 outing on Wednesday). I don't see Lamb getting much if any playing time this weekend since he has had his problems against Cleveland (.176 career average). But I don't want to think that far ahead. However, Minnesota need some bats that can provide power besides the likes of Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer and Jason Kubel.

Yeah, I'm not sure if they really want to trade him. I don't know his contract situation for sure, but I don't think he is signed for next year. If they do want to trade him, it'd still be tough since they are a rival.
