Liriano Returns E-mail

Francisco Liriano took the hill in a Twins uniform for the first time in well over a year. The outing was in no way spectacular, and Liriano did struggle at times. But overall, win or lose, it was a good sign for both Liriano and the team's future.

Liriano's final line was 4.2 innings, six hits, five walks, four runs and four strikeouts. The outing gives him a poor ERA and obviously doesn't make it look like a good start for Franchise, but fans willing to take a look past statistics, will see that that isn't entirely true.

First off, you must take several factors in consideration. It was cold. Liriano for the most part has pitched in warm weather for the past fifteen plus months. In fact, all but one of his starts came in Florida. Secondly, this was Liriano's first start in well over a year. You all know about pitchers needing to get the jitters out in their first start each season, imagine getting the jitters out in a first start after missing the previous season.

The main low points for Liriano overall were his inability to get the first pitch across for a strike, and his control as a whole. The five walks and lack of first pitch strikes is something that can easily change. As time goes on and Liriano gets back into game rhythm, that will change. His slider, fastball and changeup looked very good, and at times reminded us of his 2006 season. That is a very good sign since it's something that doesn't come back as much with time as does the control.

It was cold, the Royals scored some runs rather cheaply (bunts, wind aided hits, etc.) and for his first time out, Liriano did leave some things for fans to look forward to.

Not Looking Like the Franchise To Me
written by Dan S, April 13, 2008
Honestly I didn't see anything in Liriano's outing that reminded me of 2006. Some of his fastballs didn't even break 90 mph. His slider looks like a slow curve coming in around 80 mph. I guess I don't know on the return from Tommy John surgery if a pitchers velocity is suppossed to be so far off. Otherwise I don't see much in his future.

I'm really not sure we can write off his future after his first outing in 17 months. His velocity got better as the game went on, and if he can get better control as time goes on, that alone will help his numbers out drastically.
Crap Territory

First of all, Liriano looked terribly average. Second, you stole that "His velocity got better as the game went on" crap from the Twins' announcers today. I admire you for trying to see the positive side of things, but the reality is that Liriano hid his 2006 injury for too long and now we (baseball fans) are paying the price. It does no one any good to be overly optimistic.

get a life Get Real...will you kindly get real? You are the first person to say anything on this board against the bloggers...I must kindly ask you to shut up and not call this blog Crap Territory. You are disrespectful and apparently you know nothing about Tommy John surgery. It takes a few starts if not a year for a pitcher to fully recover from this and most often it doesnt work. Liriano has been very patient and thus will most succeed in his return. As baseball fans, we should look on the bright side of life and not focus on the gloomy.

Please, if you are going to be this disrespectful on this board, you should leave. If you want to stay on, mend your speech and apologize to Twins Territory and all the bloggers on this board.

I agree, MVP, they say the second year is the year that you can really tell if they'll make it back.

It could take the rest of this season for him to get back to form.

And yes, I did hear the velocity comment on television, but it's also easy to see that by looking across the top. He started at about 89 and as the innings passed, it went to 90-92 MPH.
