Game 18: Twins 3, Indians 0 E-mail

From FanGraphs.com
Summary:
The Twins shutout the Indians 3-0 just one day after being shutout in the series opener. Nick Blackburn was on the mound, and looked awesome. The offense scored early to give the Twins a lead, and they never looked back. Overall, the pitching and superb defense won the Twins their eighth game of the season.

Nick Blackburn had three solid outings coming in, but had an 0-1 record to show for it. The Twins finally held off a game for him, and Blackburn recorded his first major league win. His final line was 7.2 innings, eight hits, no runs and four strikeouts. He is now 1-1 on the season with a great 2.47 ERA.

The bullpen had blown two of Blackburn's games, but they finally held the lead for him. Dennys Reyes recorded the final out of the eighth with three pitches before being relieved by closer Joe Nathan. Nathan pitched in his sixth save opportunity and stayed perfect on the season with a one-two-three inning of work.

The Twins collected nine hits as a team, and turned them into three runs. All of the scoring was done in the first and second innings, and after that point, they quieted down. Justin Morneau hit a two-run homerun to put the Twins up early. It was number five on the season for Morneau. Carlos Gomez collected the other RBI with a single to left in the second.

Player of the Game:
Nick Blackburn:
There is no doubt that the player of the game is Nick Blackburn. It was his longest start ever and his first victory. More importantly, it got the Twins a win against a team that had beaten them eight times in a row.

The big story of this game was the defense. If Boof would have gotten the defense Blackburn got, hisngame would have been much closer, IMO.

I agree. Had Delmon not nailed the runner going home, the Twins would have lost the shutout early.

Harris made a huge stop at second, and then we had three other double-plays besides that. It was awesome to watch the defense play today.

I just wish Go-Go could have gotten that one smilies/cool.gif

This doesn't really have to do with the post, but I just wanted to (belatedly) comment on how great the site redesign looks. It seems there's a fine line between bombarding the reader with statboxes and other info in the sidebars while perhaps distracting from the main posts. That didn't happen here, and I have to say that everything seems well executed. I don't think we've ever put 1/10 of the same effort into our site!
Thanks
