Early Look: Santana Trade E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory

It's been almost a month since the season started and we've had a little time to see the four players acquired for Johan Santana. It'll take many years to judge who ultimately won the deal, but it's hard not to take a look at how the players involved are doing.

Humber started off slow, with a poor outing his first time out. He has since improved with his last two starts for the Red Wings. He was one of the last pitchers in camp, and could see time if the Twins need a pitcher at any point this season. In fact, if Brian Bass needs to hit the disabled list, Humber could be one of the options to replace him.

Kevin Mulvey:

Mulvey was placed at AAA before the season primarily because pitcher Randy Keisler elected free agency. He has made the most of the chance, and has been one of Rochester's best pitchers so far. In his most recent outings, Mulvey allowed just one run in seven innings while also picking up nine strikeouts. He could possibly be a call-up before Humber if he continues to pitch well.

Deolis Guerra:

Guerra has a solid ERA after three starts for the Miracle, and if he continues to pitch well, he could be at AA by season's end. This would be a remarkable feat, because Guerra turned 19 just prior to the season. It'll be fun to watch this guy grow, hopefully into something similar to Johan Santana as some scouts predict.

We've all seen Gomez at the major league level this season, and so far we've seen the ups and downs. His speed is crazy, and he is nine for ten thus far in steal attempts. His speed has also gotten him a number of infield hits, and have gotten the Twins runs by him taking the extra base. The one downfall is his plate discipline, and as we've seen, he doesn't take very many pitches. It should be fun to watch him grow, and if the early glimpse is a sign of things to come, he'll be a very good player for years to come.

Those are the guys that the Twins received in the trade, now the guy who got all the pieces.

Santana has been a pretty good pitcher so far, and has gotten what he did with the Twins -- little run support. So far this season, he is still allowing homeruns like he started to do last season, and this has been what has really hurt him. It'll be interesting to see if he stays healthy with the Mets, and how things shape up when it's all said and done.

Great Summary TT!!! This is well put together and I never really bothered to look at how the pitchers were doing in AAA and A. Thanks for doing this! Hopefully either Humber or Mulvey get called up soon if Bass doesnt quite recover! Actually right now, I think they would be a better choice than Bass at this point.

Great Job! 5 stars!!!

Thanks for the kind words smilies/smiley.gif

I think I'd rather see Humber come up for Bass simply because I think Mulvey can be a pretty good pitcher but he needs to start.

I think Humber is good too, but for some reason I see Humber more as a bullpen guy anyways.

As for Bass, no news on him yet. Everett is headed to the DL however.
