Baker Solid, Rotation Set E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Sunday, 30 March 2008

Scott Baker passed his final test of the spring today throwing six solid innings against the AA New Britain Rock Cats. In his outing, Baker allowed one run, five hits, no walks and struck out three batters. More importantly, Baker threw 71 pitches which is right where manager Ron Gardenhire said he needed to be.

Gardenhire confirmed that Baker will start the team's fifth game, and the Opening Day rotation will officially be:

Livan Hernandez
Boof Bonser
Nick Blackburn
Kevin Slowey
Scott Baker

Plus, Francisco Liriano is expected to enter the rotation on April 13 if his two outings go as planned.

2008 Season Preview E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Sunday, 30 March 2008

It all begins tomorrow, yet another season for our beloved Minnesota Twins. The look will be much different than a year ago. Gone are the faces of the team, Torii Hunter, Johan Santana and Carlos Silva. And in are the new faces that will guide the team well into the future, Delmon Young and Carlos Gomez.

It could be a rocky road this year for the Twins, but with expectations low all-around, it could also be a time to prove critics wrong and make a name for themselves.

Lets take a look at your 2008 Minnesota Twins:

Saturday, 29 March 2008

Here is some news from La Velle:

Dickey cleared waivers before the Mariners worked out a deal with the Twins, allowing Seattle to send him to the minors. The Twins’ pitching staff is set, with righthander Brian Bass claiming the final spot in the bullpen after solid spring.

The Twins will receive 21-year old catcher Jair Fernandez, who batted .260 with 2 homers and 13 RBI for Class A Wisconsin of the Midwest League.

2008 Off-Season Review E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Saturday, 29 March 2008

With the moves that the Twins have made this off-season, they’ve signified a change for the better. The Twins have showed their willingness to spend money on the key guys to keep them around rather than lose them to big spenders on the open market. They’ve also showed their change of philosophy, going out and using their strengths (pitching depth) to get their weakness (hitting).

The moves that the team made over the course of the past six months will make the team better not only for the upcoming 2008 season, but also for the future. Assuring all fans that when the new ballpark opens, they’ll be seeing a competitive team.

The off-season actually started before the end of the season with long-time veteran general manager Terry Ryan stepping down. The move was shocking to the whole Twins world, but ultimately, it may be the move that triggered the change in direction.

Liriano Staying Put E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Friday, 28 March 2008

Francisco Liriano had his best outing of the spring today only to be optioned to Single-A Fort Myers after the game. Liriano pitched five solid innings, allowing just three hits and a run. More impressive, Liriano struck out seven Pirates in the outing.

Even with the two solid consecutive starts in which Liriano upped his pitch count, showed better control and let go of his slider, it wasn’t enough to make the Opening Day roster. Ron Gardenhire and company made the decision that he should have more time.

The plan now is for Liriano to stay in Fort Myers and start the club’s opening game next Thursday. At that point, the Twins will send him to Rochester for one final tune-up and then to Minnesota to join the rotation.

The news seemed to be accepted pretty well by The Franchise. He noted that while he does feel fine and ready to start with the big league team, if the Twins feel that he needs two more starts, then he’ll make two more starts.

"I think I'm ready to start in Minnesota. If they want me to start here, I will start here. If they feel it's better for me, I don't mind starting here."

After giving the move a lot of thought, I’m still not sure what to think. I must say that I’m disappointed that he won’t be with the team on Opening Day. But seeing him get two more outings, and the fact that he really won’t miss very much of the major league season, I’m starting to accept that these two extra outings are worth it.

What do you think?

Good News E-mail

Thank you Baseball gods and Joe:

Baker threw 49 pitches in a three-inning start for Class AAA Rochester. Gardenhire said Baker could add 15 to that pitch count on Sunday, in another minor-league start, and still start the fifth game of the season against Kansas City.

Gomez had cramping in his left hamstring, nothing more, and practically begged Gardenhire to make Thursday’s trip to Sarasota, Fla. Gardenhire agreed but told Gomez he’d be furious is something more serious happens to his leg.

Directly below, you can read "the rest" of this story.

Bad Day E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Wednesday, 26 March 2008

The Twins won their spring training game today 4-2, but that doesn’t matter. What does matter are the bad things that went on today. For one, Scott Baker only threw 49 pitches, and was supposed to throw 70. And the second thing, our centerfielder Carlos Gomez left the game with a leg injury.

Baker needed to get to 70 pitches in his outing today in order to stay on schedule to stretch himself out before the season. Had everything went fine and had he been able to get to the right number, Baker would have pitched Sunday to finish up the spring. After that, Baker would have been ready to pitch the fourth game of the season.

Now, we don’t know what will happen. Gardenhire hasn’t said anything about it, but the likely guess is that Baker will need to go on the disabled list because he’ll need more time to stretch out before he can be put into the rotation.

The Gomez news is just as bad. He hit a double early, but later in the game, he came up lame in the outfield holding his left leg. He was taken out of the game after being looked at. Right now its being called a hamstring cramp.

The lone good news on the day was that the Twins collected the win and that Livan pitched a great game. His final line was six innings, four hits, one run and five strikeouts.

I’ll have updates right on this post if we get any news on what will happen with Baker or Gomez.

UPDATE 1: Gomez said he wants to play in the last three games of the spring, so it looks like it might not be to bad.

UPDATE 2: Read above for the good news!

Spring Training: Game Twenty-Six E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Tuesday, 25 March 2008

I don't want to do a whole recap of today's game, because for the most part, the backups and more so minor league guys played.

There was no Morneau, no Gomez and even the regulars like Cuddyer and Mauer didn't seem to play all that much. I did want to write about something, and that is Kevin Slowey.

Looking at Slowey's stats from today's game, you may not think he pitched all that well. But the truth is, he could have allowed no runs if not for a few different things. Here are some notes on Slowey:

** Slowey's final line was 5 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 SO.

** Slowey was sharp through 3.2 innings. In fact, he retired the first eleven hitters in order and was pitching a perfect game to this point. Jason Bay, on a defensive swing, singled through the middle with two outs in the fourth. Then, there was a hard-hit liner to Craig Monroe. The inning should have probably been over, but Monroe seemed to take a step in first and the ball went over his head. The inning went from zero runs to three after that.

** In the next inning, Luis Rivas lead off the inning with a bloop double. Actually the ball dropped in the middle of Harris, Monroe and right next to Punto. It wasn't an easy play, but Punto should have caught the ball. Rivas scored later in the inning.

** For the most part, Slowey hit his spots and did a nice job. He pitched very well except for the four runs, and as you just read, those could have been avoided.

Tomorrow will be a huge day for Scott Baker and the Twins. If all goes well, Baker should be on schedule to pitch in the fifth game of the season against the Royals. If it doesn't go well, the rotation could be shaky early on.
