By the way, it was indeed Liriano who was sent down today. Bobby Korecky has been called up to take his spot, and the Twins will presumably go with a four-man rotation since they have three off-days in their next eight games.

Liriano Down, Korecky Up? E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Friday, 25 April 2008

Thanks to La Velle for pointing it out and to the Democrat and Chronicle for first reporting it, we know that Bobby Korecky has been called up to the major leagues:

The big congratulatory hugs didn’t come until after the game. That’s when Minnesota Twins general manager Bill Smith told Wings closer Bobby Korecky that he was headed to the major leagues for the first time in his career.

As we know, Liriano was has not been good in any of his three starts. His control has suffered, and thus he is the likely option to be sent down. The only other option would be Brian Bass, but that would seem strange unless he complained of a sore back after his outing yesterday.

I fully expect Liriano to be sent down to work on control. As La Velle points out, upcoming off-days would easily allow the Twins to go with a four-man rotation meaning Korecky could be called up instead of a starter.

Cuddyer Returning Today
Some news that happened yesterday was Michael Cuddyer returning from the disabled list. To make room, the Twins optioned Denard Span to AAA Rochester. It'll be great to have Cuddyer back in the lineup, but what does the move mean for Span?

Gardenhire said after the game that he wants Span to start right now, but added that in the next couple weeks, he is going to find a way for Span to return to the bigs as a bench player.

Game 22: Twins 2, Oakland 11 E-mail

From FanGraphs.com
Summary:
After winning three straight games, the Twins have now lost their last two after getting knocked around in the series finale with the Oakland A's, 11-2. Francisco Liriano continued to near the end of his leash, not even getting through one full inning of work. From that point, the Twins never regained any strength, and had few highlights throughout the day.

Francisco Liriano has had control problems through his first two games, and they continued into game three. Liriano collected just two outs in the first inning before being relieved by Brian Bass. His final line was 0.2 innings, five hits, three walks and six runs. Just fifteen of his thirty-five pitches were strikes, and Liriano never looked sharp. It'll be interesting to see if this is his last start for the time being or if the Twins will give him another shot. Personally, I think he should go to AAA until mid-season or until his control is back.

The bullpen allowed fives runs after he left, but it wouldn't have mattered. After being down 6-1 early, there was no coming back. Brian Bass pitched 3.1 innings and allowed seven hits and four runs. Jesse Crain then allowed a solo homerun in his two innings of work. The final two innings went to Reyes and Rincon, and both continued to pitch solid ball.

After a day off, Carlos Gomez looked refreshed. In his first at-bat of the game, Gomez bombed his first homerun in his Twins career and in the American League over the left-field wall. Then in his second at-bat, Gomez finally got a bunt down for a hit. Overall, he went 2-4 with the homerun and no strikeouts. Delmon Young was the only other Twin to collect two hits, and otherwise all other players with hits recorded just one. The RBI other than Gomez's went to Brian Buscher on a single.

Box Score

Player of the Game:
Carlos Gomez:
It was nice to see Go-Go bounce back after a day off, hitting his first homerun as a Twin and finally putting a bunt into fair territory.

It wasn't a good game at all for the Twins other than the pitching performance from Twins starter Boof Bonser. Bonser last six innings, and while he walked four hitters, he allowed just two runs for yet another quality start. Unfortunately for Bonser, in all of his good starts, the team has been horrid at the plate. Bonser is now 1-4 overall on the season with the loss.

Offensively, there wasn't much of anything. Some of the main guys including Mauer and Morneau collected hits, but they never did anything with runners on and took another shutout.

The Twins are now 10-11 with the loss, and will face the A's in a season finale later this afternoon.

Sorry for not having a bigger recap, after seeing this game, I just couldn't get myself to write anything interesting. Also, I apologize for the lack of threads. I have already put one up today so I don't forget. If at anytime there isn't one this season, feel free to make one.

Game 20: Twins 5, Oakland 4 E-mail

From FanGraphs.com
Summary:
With the help of the pitching staff and more importantly Craig Monroe, the Twins got off on the right foot in the first game of their six-game road-trip, beating the A's 5-4. Livan Hernandez took the mound, and while he didn't receive a decision, he kept the Twins in the game. The important player in the game however, was Craig Monroe, who is finally starting to hit the ball and went 3-4 to help the Twins to victory.

Livan Hernandez came into the game with a solid ERA and a 3-0 record. He continued to give the Twins solid production, leading them through the sixth inning with the Twins down just a run. Hernandez's final line was six innings, seven hits, four runs and three strikeouts. He left with the Twins down one, but they scored the next inning to take him off the hook. With the outing, Hernandez remains 3-0 with a solid 3.55 ERA.

The bullpen picked up the final three innings, and did a solid job to pick up the team's third straight victory. Juan Rincon was on first, and continued to pitch well, pitching one inning and allowing just a walk. The eighth then went to Pat Neshek with the Twins in front 5-4. Neshek completed his hold with a solid one-two-three inning of work. Joe Nathan was then on for the ninth for his seventh save chance and other than allowing a hit, Nathan dominated. His final line was one inning, one hit and three strikeouts. He is now seven for seven in save opportunities this season.

Offensively, the production from three select players lifted the team to victory. The big story on the night was Craig Monroe, who finished just a triple shy of the cycle. Monroe went 3-4 on the night with a single, double, homerun and three RBI. With the big game, Monroe has skyrocketed to a .300 average on the season and earned himself more time to prove he deserves a chance. Jason Kubel hit the eventual game-winning single in the eight, and Mike Lamb also had a good game, going 3-4 with the team's other RBI.

Box Score

Player of the Game:
Criag Monroe:
Craig Monroe is easily the player of the game. With a 3-4 game in which he provided three of the team's five runs, there is no other choice. Monroe has really started to hit in the past five games, and we're all hoping this is the start of a new beginning for the once prominent player.

Game 19: Twins 2, Indians 1 (10) E-mail

From FanGraphs.com
Summary:
The Twins picked up their first walk-off victory of the season, beating the Cleveland Indians in the bottom half of the tenth for the series win, 2-1. With the win, the Twins are now 9-10 overall on the season and will now head west to play the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers this upcoming week.

Scott Baker took the mound having just one problem so far this season -- the longball. Baker got that under control in the win, allowing no homeruns and just one run overall. Baker's final line was seven innings, five hits, one run and a season high eight strikeouts. The offense for the Twins was quiet however, and Baker received a no-decision. He has a 3.51 ERA after the outing.

The bullpen picked up where Baker left off, pitching three solid innings after his exit. Dennys Reyes was on for the second straight day and allowed a hit and no runs in his lone inning of work. Neshek pitched the ninth and walked a hitter but went through the inning with no damage done. The tenth inning and the win went to Matt Guerrier and he pitched a one-two-three inning.

Offensively, the Twins collected elven hits on the day, but needed a walk-off run to take the win. The big hitters were numbers two, three and four, as all of the run production came from them. Brendan Harris put the Twins on the board in the third with a solo homerun, his first of the season. Overall, Harris went 3-5, Kubel went 2-4 and Morneau went 2-5. The big hit came from the bat of Justin Morneau in the bottom half of the tenth. With runners on the corners, Morneau singled to right to pick up the game winning RBI. Other players to receive hits were Nick Punto (two hits), Brian Buscher and Mike Redmond.

Box Score

Player of the Game:
Justin Morneu and Scott Baker:
Today there are two players of the game. Morneau delivered the game-winning hit, so it's only right that he be one of them. On the other hand, Scott Baker turned in a solid pitching performance when the offense needed it and kept the Twins in the game. Honorable mention goes to Brendan Harris who finally put another Twin on the homerun charts.

From FanGraphs.com
Summary:
The Twins shutout the Indians 3-0 just one day after being shutout in the series opener. Nick Blackburn was on the mound, and looked awesome. The offense scored early to give the Twins a lead, and they never looked back. Overall, the pitching and superb defense won the Twins their eighth game of the season.

Nick Blackburn had three solid outings coming in, but had an 0-1 record to show for it. The Twins finally held off a game for him, and Blackburn recorded his first major league win. His final line was 7.2 innings, eight hits, no runs and four strikeouts. He is now 1-1 on the season with a great 2.47 ERA.

The bullpen had blown two of Blackburn's games, but they finally held the lead for him. Dennys Reyes recorded the final out of the eighth with three pitches before being relieved by closer Joe Nathan. Nathan pitched in his sixth save opportunity and stayed perfect on the season with a one-two-three inning of work.

The Twins collected nine hits as a team, and turned them into three runs. All of the scoring was done in the first and second innings, and after that point, they quieted down. Justin Morneau hit a two-run homerun to put the Twins up early. It was number five on the season for Morneau. Carlos Gomez collected the other RBI with a single to left in the second.

Player of the Game:
Nick Blackburn:
There is no doubt that the player of the game is Nick Blackburn. It was his longest start ever and his first victory. More importantly, it got the Twins a win against a team that had beaten them eight times in a row.

Buscher Heading North E-mail
Written by TwinsTerritory
Saturday, 19 April 2008

Adam Everett has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder. There is no timetable for his return, but the first day that he'll be eligible to return to the lineup is April 29.

To take his place on the active roster, the Twins have recalled third basemen Brian Buscher from AAA Rochester. So far in fifteen games for the Red Wings, Buscher is hitting .345 with four homeruns and 11 RBI.

In addition, the Twins have sent Kevin Slowey and Michael Cuddyer to Fort Myers, Florida for rehab. Slowey will make two starts with the Miracle and then one with the Red Wings before returning. Cuddyer meanwhile will workout with the GCL team and return when healthy.
